James Gunn reveals he has no interest in directing a Star Wars movie

March 22, 2020 by EJ Moreno

While he’s no stranger to big blockbusters and space adventures, James Gunn says he isn’t interested in tackling the world of Star Wars.

The Guardians of the Galaxy director candidly admitted during an Instagram Q&A that the franchise serves no interest to him, with Gunn stating:

“[Star Wars] doesn’t really interest me as a filmmaker. I can’t think of any franchises I’d want to join other than the ones I’m already part of.”

As he’s already part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will soon join the DC Extended Universe with The Suicide Squad, Gunn does have a lot on his hands when it comes to fandoms. However, it seems he has no enthusiasm for tackling Star Wars on the big or small screen, having stated back in December that he would not be interested in directing an episode of The Mandalorian.

Gunn’s latest project is DC Films’ The Suicide Squad, which recently wrapped production and is scheduled for an August 6th, 2021 release. He’ll also be reuniting with his Guardians cast members for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is expected to shoot at some point next year.
