Courteney Cox returning to iconic role of Gale Weathers for Scream 5

July 31, 2020 by EJ Moreno

When David Arquette announced he’d be returning to the Scream franchise for a fifth installment, many fans waited on pins and needles to know if his ex-wife and co-star Courteney Cox would join him. The wait is over as Deadline confirms Cox will reprise her iconic role as Gale Weathers for Scream 5.

The reporter and author who helped solve each other murders, the Gale Weathers character is an integral part of what makes Scream work. Cox took on the role originally in the 1996 original Scream and has appeared in every sequel to date. Alongside series regulars Neve Campbell and David Arquette, Cox became a huge name in the horror community just for this role alone.

Cox took to her Instagram account today to confirm the news with the following post:

In a statement to Deadline, filmmaking team Radio Silence expressed their joy in having Cox on board:”We can’t imagine Scream without the iconic Gale Weathers and are so incredibly thrilled and humbled to have the opportunity to work with Courteney. We’re absolute mega fans of her work, and we’re so excited to join her in the next chapter of the Scream saga!”

At the time of reporting, Neve Campbell is still not officially announced for the new movie, but the directors, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of the filmmaking group Radio Silence, have reached out to her. With Cox and Arquette ready to face off with Ghostface again, it feels like only a matter of time until that happens though.
