Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was going to feature M.O.D.O.K. until Marvel nixed the idea

August 16, 2020 by Gary Collinson

With Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. wrapping up its seven-season run this past week with its series finale, showrunner and co-creator Jed Whedon has been giving fans some insight into nixed story ideas from the Avengers spinoff, including a planned appearance from the Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing, a.k.a. the fan favourite villain M.O.D.O.K.!

“We had a lot of ideas where we were—and I’ll say this, I don’t care—we were given the green light originally to use certain characters from Marvel, and started to break story based on those characters – [Cough] M.O.D.O.K. – and then they retracted it,” Whedon told the AV Club. “So there were a bunch of things that were going to get a little batshit crazy that were above our pay grade, in terms of the toys we were allowed to play with.”

Whedon didn’t explain why Marvel pulled the plug on the supervillain, although it may well have clashed with Marvel’s plans for the character; he will soon headline his own M.O.D.O.K. animated series, voiced by Patton Oswalt, and it was also revealed back in June that Keith David was set to portray the character (eventually) in the now-abandoned New Warriors. Rumours have also circulated this year that the character could feature in Ant-Man 3, and that he was included in a script for the threequel penned by star Paul Rudd.

Would you have liked to see M.O.D.O.K. appearing in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., or do you think the character could be better utilised elsewhere? Let us know your thoughts @FlickeringMyth…
