Florence Pugh says Black Widow’s storyline is “very horrifying”

November 13, 2020 by Gary Collinson

The movie may have been pushed back into 2021, but Titan Books have given fans a peek behind-the-scenes of Marvel Studios’ Black Widow this week with the release of Black Widow: The Official Movie Special Book.

Among the interviews with the cast and crew of the film are comments from Marvel Cinematic Universe newcomer Florence Pugh, who has described the storyline of the Scarlett Johansson-led solo movie as “very horrifying” and how she’s excited to be part of it.

“The storyline that we are telling is very horrifying,” said Pugh, who is taking on the role of Yelena Belova. “It’s about women that have been, essentially, abused and trained up to be killing machines. As Scarlett said over and over, this is the right time for her to be telling [Natasha’s] story. And we’re not shying away from the fact that this story is essentially about women getting their life back. And it’s a Marvel Studios film, too. That’s pretty rare, and it’s very exciting to be a part of that.”

Sadly, we still have a little while to wait before we get to see Black Widow, with the film having been delayed to May 2021 due to the ongoing health crisis. However, you can pick up Black Widow: The Official Movie Special Book in stores now.

In Marvel Studios’ action-packed spy thriller “Black Widow,” Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger.

Black Widow is being directed by Cate Shortland (Lore) and sees Scarlett Johansson reprising her role as Natasha Romanoff alongside Florence Pugh (Fighting With My Family) as Yelena Belova, O-T Fagbenle (The Handmaid’s Tale) as Mason, David Harbour (Stranger Things) as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Rachel Weisz (The Favourite) as Melina Vostokoff/Iron Maiden, Ray Winstone (Sexy Beast) as Dreykov and Olivier Richters (The King’s Man) in an as-yet-unrevealed role.
