Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard to bring ThunderCats to the big screen

March 30, 2021 by EJ Moreno

Coming off a monstrous opening weekend overseas with Godzilla vs. Kong, director Adam Wingard seems to have a stack of projects line-up to tackle next. Not only is the prolific filmmaker working on a sequel to the 90s cult classic Face/Off, but Wingard is also now attached to the upcoming ThunderCats live-action movie.

Deadline reports that Wingard is looking to direct the project and plans to bring an “80s aesthetic” to the movie, with the filmmaker telling the trade that: “I don’t want to reinvent the way they look; I want them to look like Thundercats. I want to do a movie you’ve never seen before: A hybrid CGI film that has a hyper-real look and somehow bridges the gap between cartoon and CGI. That’s the starting point.”

Wingard will re-team with frequent collaborator Simon Barrett to pen the script. The pair have worked on projects like You’re Next and The Guest. Dan Lin of Rideback and Roy Lee of Vertigo was set to produce the film with a script by David Coggeshall, but Wingard and Barrett are starting fresh.

The original ThunderCats animated series aired from 1985 to 1989. The cartoon saw a team of humanoid cat-people like Lion-O, Panthro, and Cheetara fight the evil wizard Mumm-Ra on the planet of Third Earth.
