Action Comics #1 sets new world record with $3.25 million sale

April 8, 2021 by Gary Collinson

A rare, high-grade copy of Action Comics #1 has sold for $3.25 million, setting a new world record for the most expensive comic book sale of all time.

Released in 1938, Action Comics #1 is one of the most famous comic books in history, marking the first appearance of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s Superman.

Only around a hundred copies are still believed to exist, and this particular copy – a CGC-certified 8.5 (VF+) comic – is the second-highest graded behind two CGC 9.0 VF/NM copies, one of which held the previous record sale price of $3,207,852.

The Action Comics #1 sale was brokered by ComicConnect, which notes that this particular comic has more than doubled in value since it was sold for $1.5 million in 2010, with subsequent sales in 2017 ($1.75 million) and 2018 ($2.05 million). Sounds like a pretty good investment if you’ve a few million lying around…
