HBO’s The Last of Us series adds two directors

January 21, 2022 by Liam Waddington

With HBO’s series adaptation of The Last of Us currently in production, an updated production list has revealed the addition of two well-known directors who will each direct at least one episode of the series.

According to the production sheet, Jeremy Webb and Liza Johnson are now among the seven listed directors including the already announced Craig Mazin, Neil Druckmann, Jasmila Zbanic, Kantemir Balagov, and Peter Hoar. There is currently no information regarding how many episodes each filmmaker will direct but we do know Balagov has helmed the pilot episode.

Webb has recently directed two episodes of Shadow and Bone and is also set to direct the first episode of Umbrella Academy’s third season after having previously directed three episodes from the show’s previous seasons. His other credits include Fear the Walking Dead and The Punisher. While Johnson has credits including American Horror Story, Physical, and What We Do in the Shadows.

Written by Chernobyl‘s Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, The Last of Us stars Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian) and Bella Ramsey (Game of Thrones) who will play Joel and Ellie respectively, with Gabriel Luna set to play Joel’s brother, Tommy, Merle Dandridge reprising her video game role as Marlene, Nico Parker (The Third Day) as Joel’s daughter, Sarah, Jeffrey Pierce (Bosch) as Perry, a rebel in a quarantine zone, Murray Bartlett (The White Lotus) as Frank, Anna Torv (Mindhunter) as Tess, and Storm Reid (Euphoria) as Riley.

The Last of Us is “set 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed and centres on the relationship between Joel, a smuggler in this new world, and Ellie, a teenager who may be key to a cure for a deadly pandemic. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle the 14-year-old girl out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey as they traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.”

The Last of Us is expected to premiere on HBO later this year.
