Michelle Yeoh is a goddess in first look at Disney+ series American Born Chinese

September 12, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

“It’s a lot of fun, a lot of magic, a lot of badass action” is how Michelle Yeoh describes American Born Chinese, Disney’s adaptation of Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel, which tells a story of friendship amidst a battle between Chinese mythological gods.

Ben Wang (Sight) stars as the unwitting teenager caught up in this magical showdown alongside Yeo Yann Yann (Wet Season) as Christine Wang, Chin Han (Skyscraper) as Simon Wang, Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once) as Freddy Wong, Ching Liu as Wei-Chen (Light the Night), Sydney Taylor (Mystery City) as Amelia, with Daniel Wu (Westworld) as Sun Wukong “The Monkey King” and Michelle Yeoh (Avatar: The Way of Water) as Guanyin.

You can check out a behind-the-scenes featurette showcasing the world showrunner Kelvin Yu and director Destin Daniel Cretton (Marvel’s Avengers: The Kang Dynasty) are creating below…

Based on the genre-hopping graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang, American Born Chinese follows Jin Wang, an average teenager juggling his high school social life with his immigrant home life. When he meets a new foreign student at school two worlds collide into one epic adventure..

American Born Chinese is currently in-production and expected to be released on Disney+ sometime in 2023.
