If you were around in the 2000s, you know the impact of Mean Girls. The teen comedy made quite a splash upon its debut, and now a new generation will experience the hilarity of high school.
Although this new Mean Girls is going a different route, the Broadway musical adaptation of the 2004 teen comedy is headed to the screen, debuting on Paramount+ later in 2023.
Joining this new version of the Mean Girls musical are Angourie Rice, Auli’i Cravalho, Jaquel Spivey, and Reneé Rapp (who starred as Regina George in the Broadway musical). While Rapp will reprise her role as Regina George, Rice will play Cady, originally played by Lohan, Cravalho will play Janis and Spivey will play Damien, originally played by Lizzy Caplan and Daniel Franzese respectively. The rest of The Plastics have not cast at the time of writing.
The plot of Mean Girls follows teenager Cady Heron, who moves from Africa with her scientist parents to the suburbs of Illinois, where she gets swept up in the dynamics of her new high school’s social hierarchy. She falls in with a popular clique known as The Plastics.
Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr. are set to direct the musical, with Tina Fey returning to Mean Girls to write the movie musical’s feature script. Lorne Michaels will return to produce alongside Fey.
