Oscar-nominated Minari director Lee Isaac Chung in talks for Twister sequel

December 16, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

It appears that Minari director Lee Isaac Chung is quite keen on Oklahoma, because he’s reportedly staying in the State in order to chase tornados for Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainments sequel to 1996’s $494 million grossing Twister.

According to Deadline Chung is in early talks to direct the film, which had a script by The Revenant‘s Mark L. Smith fast-tracked on the say-so of Amblin’s Steven Spielberg.

Titled Twisters and co-financed by Universal and Warner Bros., the studios have been on the hunt for a director since Top Gun: Maverick‘s Joseph Kosinski departed to steer Brad Pitt’s Formula One movie for Apple.

It was revealed earlier in the year that the filmmakers intend to bring back the original storm-chaser Helen Hunt, to tell a story which focuses on the daughter she had with the character played by the late great Bill Paxton, who has inherited the same windy issues as her parents.

Chung is hot-property following the performance of A24’s Minari, which was nominated for six Academy Awards in 2001, including Best Picture, Best Director for Chung, Best Actor (Steven Yeun), Best Supporting Actress (Yuh-Jung Youn), Best Original Screenplay, and Original Score, so it’s perhaps a bit surprising that he’d opt to take on a tentpole sequel to a film that’s over 25-years old.
