Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 synopsis sounds ominous for Rocket Raccoon

February 9, 2023 by Gary Collinson

James Gunn has said on numerous occasions that the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will mark the conclusion of his Guardians story – something that now seems set in stone with the filmmaker going Warner Bros-exclusive as the new co-head of DC Studios.

As such, it seems almost a foregone conclusion that one or more of our original bunch of A-holes won’t be making it through to the film’s post-credits scenes. Drax the Destroyer would seem a strong candidate to die, with Dave Bautista making no secret of the fact he’s calling time on his MCU adventure with Vol. 3, but there’s one other Guardian that many fans have been worrying about, and the latest synopsis for the trilogy capper isn’t going to do anything to ease those concerns.

“In Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 our beloved band of misfits are settling into life on Knowhere,” reads the synopsis. “But it isn’t long before their lives are upended by the echoes of Rocket’s turbulent past. Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him on a dangerous mission to save Rocket’s life-a mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.”

Not to add to these worries, but if you include The Snap and alternate timelines, then – besides Kraglin – Rocket is the only member of Gunn’s Guardians we haven’t already seen die in the MCU… so, does that spell doom for Rocket Raccoon, or are we being set up for a swerve? We’ll find out in May, but let us know your predictions for the fate of Rocket and the rest of the Guardians over on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will see the return of Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax the Destroyer), Bradley Cooper (Rocket Raccoon), Vin Diesel (Groot), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Pom Klementieff (Mantis), Sean Gunn (Kraglin), Sylvester Stallone (Stakar Ogord), Elizabeth Debecki (Ayesha) and Michael Rosenbaum (Martinex), alongside MCU newcomers Will Poulter (Dopesick) as Adam Warlock, Chukwudi Iwuji (Peacemaker) as the High Evolutionary, Maria Bakalova (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm) as Cosmo the Spacedog, and Daniela Melchior (The Suicide Squad) and Nico Santos (Crazy Rich Asians) in as-yet-unrevealed roles.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set for release on May 5th 2023.
