Amazon fast-tracking The Day of the Triffids TV series

March 6, 2023 by Gary Collinson

Amazon Studios has set Emmy-winner Johan Renick (Chernobyl) to develop a new TV series adaptation of John Wyndham’s classic sci-fi novel The Day of the Triffids, which the streamer is reportedly looking to fast-track in the wake of the success of HBO’s The Last of Us.

Renick will serve as director and executive producer on the series, which takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where most of the population was blinded by a meteor shower and the survivors hunted by carnivorous killer plants known as triffids.

Wyndham’s book has been adapted for film and television on several occasions, most notably the 1962 movie starring Howard Keel, along with BBC TV adaptations in 1981 and 2009, the latter of which starred Dougray Scott, Joely Richardson, Eddie Izzard, Brian Cox and Vanessa Redgrave.

Along with Renick, The Day of the Triffids will be produced by Angry Films’ Susan Montford and Don Murphy, with Murphy attached to the property since 2010 when he was originally planning a 3D movie adaptation.
