Benedict Cumberbatch to don Doctor Strange’s cape in the MCU “next year”

July 5, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

One of the more omnipresent beings in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange, and it appears that the actor isn’t quite done with the role as he revealed he’ll be putting on the magical cape once again next year for an undisclosed Marvel project.

Cumberbatch was in conversation for the JW3 Speaker Series, speaking about everything from his Oscar-nominated turn in The Power of the Dog to his predilection for playing roles as “the outsider”, when he revealed (jump to 33mins) that “there are some Marvel capers in the making next year”.

It’s unclear in what capacity Cumberbatch will show up, with a Doctor Strange sequel unlikely at this point in the MCU timeline, and Avengers: The Kang Dynasty delayed.

So far Cumberbatch has appeared in Doctor Strange (2016), Thor:Ragnarok (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), What If…? (2021), Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), where the post-credits scene introduced Charlize Theron’s Clea, who whisked Strange off on a cosmic adventure to fix another of his magical mishaps.
