Star Trek gets musical with trailer for Strange New Worlds episode ‘Subspace Rhapsody’

July 23, 2023 by EJ Moreno

We are truly entering a strange new world for Star Trek fans.  Announced as part of the Star Trek Universe panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, it was announced that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 will feature the franchise’s first-ever musical episode.

In the upcoming ninth episode of Season 2, the cast will venture where no space show has gone and offer up tunes. It will be a bold move, but the moment feels right for this wild Star Trek series.

The original songs for the Subspace Rhapsody episode were composed by Kay Hanley and Tom Polce of the rock band Letters to Cleo. The band is also familiar with working in the film and television space; Letter To Cleo has worked on films like 10 Things I Hate About You, the cult classic Josie and the Pussycats, and shows like Melrose Place.

While this may shock some diehard Trekkies, television viewers are no strangers to the concept of a random musical episode. Buffy The Vampire Slayer made it famous with their season six episode, Once More With Feeling, and since then, various shows from Scrubs to The Flash have ventured into that. Riverdale had multiple musical episodes during its run, and we all know Glee turned the concept into a pop culture juggernaut.

Check out the ‘Subspace Rhapsody’ poster and trailer below…

In Season 2 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise, under the command of Captain Christopher Pike, confronts increasingly dangerous stakes, explores uncharted territories, and encounters new life and civilizations. The crew will also embark on personal journeys that will continue to test their resolve and redefine their destinies. Facing friends and enemies both new and familiar, their adventures will unfold in surprising ways never seen before on any Star Trek series.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds stars Anson Mount as Captain Pike alongside Ethan Peck and Rebecca Romijn, who also reprise their Discovery roles as Spock and Number One, a.k.a. Una Chin-Riley, respectively. Filling out the crew of the USS Enterprise are Jess Bush (Skinford) as Nurse Christine Chapel, Celia Rose Gooding (Jagged Little Pill) as Nyota Uhura, Babs Olusanmokun (Dune) as Dr. M’Benga, Christina Chong (Black Mirror) as La’an Noonien-Singh, Melissa Navia (Billions) as Erica Ortegas, and Carol Kane (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) as Chief Engineer Pelia.
