Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’s “weird-as-f*ck villains” influenced by The Real Ghostbusters

January 19, 2024 by EJ Moreno

Are you wanting a bit more kooky from your Ghostbusters? Were you a fan of the most wacky vibes of the late 80s cartoon? Prepare to love what they are cooking up for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.

Director Gil Kenan gave a bit of insight into the film and the villains, which will come straight from the cult classic animated series The Real Ghostbusters.

The filmmaker teases the upcoming film is influenced by the show’s “wild, original, and weird-as-fuck villains. We wanted to bring that show’s looseness and fearlessness to this movie. I think it’s going to surprise people just how big this film is.”

The beloved animated series ran from September 13, 1986, to October 5, 1991. They continued the adventures of paranormal investigators Dr. Peter Venkman, Dr. Egon Spengler, Dr. Ray Stantz, Winston Zeddemore, their secretary Janine Melnitz, and their mascot ghost Slimer.

Check out the trailer for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire here…

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire finds the Spengler family returning to where it all started, the iconic New York City firehouse, to team up with the original Ghostbusters, who’ve developed a top-secret research lab to take busting ghosts to the next level. But when the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters, new and old, must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire sees McKenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, Carrie Coon, Paul Rudd, Celeste O’Connor, and Logan Kim reprise their Ghostbusters: Afterlife roles alongside franchise veterans Ernie Hudson, Bill Murray, and Dan Aykroyd with franchise newcomers Kumail Nanjiani and Patton Oswalt.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire will be released on March 22nd, 2024.
