Terminator Genisys bombs at the US box office

July 6, 2015 by admin

It has been met with a sea of bad reviews (read ours here and here), and it seems as though the cinema going public aren’t willing to buy into Terminator Genisys either.

The movie opened to third behind Jurassic World (in its fourth week) and Inside Out (in its third week) to take just $28.7 million domestically. With a reported budget of $150 million, that has to be a huge disappointment for the Terminator team, who were hoping this movie could lead to another trilogy of movies. The previous Terminator movie, Terminator: Salvation (which was also set to start a new trilogy of movies) opened to $42.5 million and was seen as a failure at the time.

Thankfully for Paramount, Terminator Genisys did perform well overseas, and has a worldwide box office total of $129.6 million. So it’s not all bad news. However, a domestic opening of $28 million could put into question the future of the Terminator franchise.

In the new installment of The Terminator series, John Connor, leader of the human resistance against Skynet, sends Kyle Reese back to 1984 to protect his mother, Sarah Conner, from a Terminator assassin, an unexpected turn of events creates an altered timeline. Instead of a scared waitress, Sarah is a skilled fighter and has a Terminator guardian by her side. Faced with unlikely allies and dangerous new enemies, Reese sets out on an unexpected new mission to reset the future.

Terminator Genisys is out now, with Arnold Schwarzenegger leading a cast that also includes Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones), Jason Clarke (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), Jai Courtney (Suicide Squad), Matt Smith (Doctor Who), J.K. Simmons (Whiplash), Courtney B. Vance (Law & Order: Criminal Intent), Byung-hun Lee (G.I. Joe: Retaliation), Dayo Okeniyi (The Hunger Games), Michael Gladis (Mad Men), Sandrine Holt (House of Cards) and Douglas Smith (Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters). Listen to the Flickering Myth Podcast review of Terminator Genisys using the player below:
