Jake Gyllenhaal in talks for Mysterio role in Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel

May 21, 2018 by Tom Beasley

He has spent most of the last few months denying rumours that he’s about to play Batman, but it seems Jake Gyllenhaal might be getting close to a rather different superhero role – a villainous one.

A new article in The Hollywood Reporter has revealed Gyllenhaal is in talks to play Mysterio in the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming

Mysterio is one of the webslinger’s most popular villains in the comic books, but has never appeared in a live-action movie.

The character, whose alter ego is Quentin Beck, does not possess superhuman abilities, but is a match for Spider-Man as a result of his skills as a stuntman and illusionist, as well as an inventor of unusual technology and chemical weapons.

This would place Mysterio into the same ballpark as Michael Keaton’s take on Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming, who was an ordinary man enhanced by alien technology.

Kevin Feige has confirmed the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel will see the hero leave New York City, with filming set to take place in London during the summer.

The currently untitled sequel is due to hit cinemas on July 5th, 2019. The first film’s director Jon Watts is set to return alongside star Tom Holland, who recently appeared alongside Marvel’s other heroes in Avengers: Infinity War.
