Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation tracking soft at the box office

July 17, 2015 by Scott J. Davis

We are less than an fortnight away from the return of Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt in the fifth Mission: Impossible film, Rogue Nation, but it may face a slight uphill battle at the box office if early estimates are to be believed, reports Variety.

Opening on July 31st, Rogue Nation is tracking behind many of the year’s biggest films as well as those immediately around it such as Marvel’s Ant-Man. Early indications are that the film is on course for an opening US weekend of around $40 million, which is slightly lower than some had predicted even though it would be above the $29.8 million opening of the previous film, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.

Despite the opening weekend estimates, it is thought that the fifth entry in the franchise could very well take a similar path as Ghost Protocol and play consistently well through its opening weeks. The fourth film opened lower on its Christmas release in 2011, but performed superbly over its run ending up with a worldwide total of $694.7 million, $210 million of which came from the US.

Estimates are of course just that, and looking at the box office performances of many films through the summer, it would take a brave person to bet against Mission 5 opening much bigger than expected with some saying the film could easily debut with over $50million.

With the IMF disbanded, and Ethan (Tom Cruise) out in the cold, the team now faces off against a network of highly skilled special agents, the Syndicate. These highly trained operatives are hellbent on creating a new world order through an escalating series of terrorist attacks. Ethan gathers his team and joins forces with disavowed British agent Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), who may or may not be a member of this rogue nation, as the group faces their most impossible mission yet.

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation is set for release on July 31st, with Christopher McQuarrie directing Tom Cruise alongside fellow franchise veterans Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames and new additions Rebecca Ferguson (Hercules), Sean Harris (Prometheus) and Alec Baldwin (Still Alice).
