Rumour: Star Trek 4 to feature a female villain, will shoot early 2019

July 16, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Back in April, Paramount Pictures announced that it is moving ahead with its original plans for Star Trek 4, tapping director S.J. Clarkson (Jessica Jones) to become the first female filmmaker on the long-running movie series.

And, if a new rumour from That Hashtag Show is to be believed, the film will also be introducing a new female villain, with the producers currently looking to cast two actresses, one for the main antagonist and another as an “additional female hero”, and are planning to begin production in “early 2019”.

The site claims that Clarkson sees Tilda Swinton as the ideal actress for the villain, although Swinton is said to be outside of the age range and not under consideration. The Walking Dead and Black Panther star Danai Gurira was just recently announced as being in early negotiations to join the film, and it’s said that it will be one of these two roles.

Star Trek 4 has been scripted by J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, and is expected to see Chris Hemsworth reprising his role as George Kirk, Captain Kirk’s father, from the 2009 reboot, alongside NuTrek Enterprise crew Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg and John Cho.

The film’s logline reads:

“Captain Kirk will cross paths with a man he never got to meet, but whose legacy has haunted him since the day he was born: his father.”

In addition to Star Trek 4, Paramount also has Quentin Tarantino’s Star Trek movie in development, which may move forward once Tarantino finishes up his next film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and – according to Zachary Quinto – could also feature the NuTrek crew.
