Hugh Laurie to star in Armando Iannucci’s sci-fi comedy Avenue 5

August 23, 2018 by Ricky Church

House alum Hugh Laurie is teaming up once again with HBO and Veep creator Armando Iannucci for Avenue 5, a new sci-fi comedy from the network that is set in the future and mostly in space.

Laurie will portray the lead role of Ryan Clark, the charming and in-control American captain of the Avenue 5. Iannucci created the series and will executive produce. HBO has given Avenue 5 a pilot order with other scripts written, but has not yet been green-lit for a full series order.

Laurie had a recurring role in Veep‘s fourth season, the final season Iannucci was showrunner on, and also starred in Hulu’s short-lived series Chance. He will appear in another of Hulu’s project, the adaptation of Catch-22 as Major de Coverley.

Avenue 5 is expected to begin production on the pilot this year in London. Should it be given a series order, it could premiere in late 2019 or early 2020.
