James Gunn-produced horror BrightBurn gets Memorial Day 2019 release

October 11, 2018 by Gary Collinson

In the days leading up to the San Diego Comic-Con this past July, James Gunn announced that he’d be making an appearance in Hall H to unveil a new horror project for Sony’s Screen Gems.

Unfortunately for Gunn and his fans, the announcement coincided with the news that he’d been fired from Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, leaving the fate of the mystery horror project somewhat up in the air.

Screen Gems subsequently announced that the project would still be released this November, but now comes word from THR that the film – titled BrightBurn – has now been pushed back from November 30th to the Memorial Day weekend on May 24th 2019.

Details on BrightBurn are scarce, although we do know that Gunn is producing the film, while David Yarovesky (The Hive) directs from a script by Gunn’s brother Brian Gunn and cousin Mark Gunn. It will reteam Gunn with his Slither star Elizabeth Banks, while the cast also includes Jackson Dunn (Shameless), David Denman (Power Rangers), Meredith Hagner (Search Party) and Matt Jones (The Layover).

Just this week, it has been revealed that Gunn is swapping the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the DC Extended Universe, having signed on to write and potentially direct Suicide Squad 2.
