Smallville’s Michael Rosenbaum responds to calls for him to reprise Lex Luthor role in Supergirl

October 21, 2018 by Amie Cranswick

A few days ago it was announced that the iconic Superman villain Lex Luthor is set to make his much-teased debut in The CW’s DC superhero show Supergirl.

Within minutes of the news breaking, Smallville fans began calling for Michael Rosenbaum to reprise the role he portrayed opposite Tom Welling’s Clark Kent between 2001 and 2011, and Rosenbaum himself has taken to Twitter to offer a tongue in cheek response…

Definitely underrated. Haha

— Michael Rosenbaum (@michaelrosenbum) October 18, 2018

There’s nothing in Rosenbaum’s response to indicate whether he’d be open to a return as Lex Luthor, although given that he and Welling both recently expressed interest in returning for an animated Smallville reunion, one would assume he’d not be entirely opposed to the idea.

As for whether Supergirl’s producers would be keen on the idea, Tom Welling previously claimed there was “some discussion” about him playing Superman in the show, although ultimately Tyler Hoechlin was cast as the Arrowverse incarnation of the Man of Steel.

Would you like to see Michael Rosenbaum back as Lex Luthor, or should Supergirl go in a different direction? Let us know in the comments…

Season three saw Supergirl stop Reign and the other Worldkillers’ threat to humanity and our planet, and in the process, Kara was shocked to find her mother Alura alive and living in a salvaged Argo City that survived the destruction of Krypton. Reconnecting with her past caused Kara to realize that her true home is now here on Earth, where big changes are taking place for her and all of her friends in National City – and also, it appears, for a doppelganger in Russia! Season four promises to be full of surprises, action, adventure and lots of big revelations for Supergirl, Alex, James, J’onn, Lena and Brainy.

Supergirl season 4 airs on Sundays on The CW.
