Aquaman rises to $940 million worldwide as Bumblebee tops China box office

January 6, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Having surpassed Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice to become the highest-grossing instalment of the DC Extended Universe yesterday, Aquaman has held onto top spot at the North American box office for the third weekend in a row, and in the process has pushed its global haul to $940 million.

In North America, Aquaman grossed $30.7 million at the third weekend of asking, comfortably fending off competition from the newly-released thriller Escape Room in second place with $18 million.

The Jason Momoa-headlined DC blockbuster has grossed $260 million domestically, but it is the international markets where it is really excelling. It added $56.2 million internationally between Friday and Sunday for an overseas take of $681 million and a worldwide gross of $940.7 million. Expect it to pass the billion dollar mark by close of play next weekend.

Although Aquaman continues to rake in the cash, it did fall from the top of the international chart this week, with Bumblebee earning $82.7 million, including a $59.4 million opening weekend in China. The well-reviewed Transformers spinoff has earned $289.1 million worldwide so far and will end its run as the lowest-grossing movie in the Transformers series, although it’s also been the cheapest to make, with its $135 million budget down considerably from Transformers: The Last Knight’s $220 million.

From Warner Bros. Pictures and director James Wan comes an action-packed adventure that spans the vast, visually breathtaking underwater world of the seven seas, “Aquaman”, starring Jason Momoa in the title role. The film reveals the origin story of half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry and takes him on the journey of his lifetime — one that will not only force him to face who he really is, but to discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be … a king.”

Aquaman is directed by James Wan (The Conjuring) and stars Jason Momoa as the titular hero, reprising his role from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, along with Amber Heard as Mera, Patrick Wilson as Ocean Master, Willem Dafoe as Dr. Vulko, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus, Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, Temuera Morrison as Tom Curry, Ludi Lin as Murk, Michael Beach as Jesse Kane, Djimon Hounsou as the Fisherman King, Randall Park as Dr. Stephen Shin, Otis Dhanji as a young Arthur Curry, Julie Andrews as Karathen and Graham McTavish as King Atlan.
