Back in February of last year it was announced that video game giant Nintendo is getting back into the movie business, teaming with Illumination Entertainment for an animated Super Mario Bros. film.
In November, it was confirmed that the project is moving ahead and that Illumination will be working closely with Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto on the film, and now comes word from Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa that the animated feature will be released into cinemas in 2022.
That will be 29 years after Mario’s first big screen outing, when Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo starred as Mario and Luigi in the disastrous Super Mario Bros. live action movie – the film responsible for Nintendo cutting itself off from Hollywood in the first place.
Details on Super Mario Bros. are being kept tightly under wraps, but we do know that it is being produced by Chris Meledandri, the founder and CEO of Illumination.
