The Flash Season 5 Episode 13 Review – ‘Goldfaced’

February 7, 2019 by Jessie Robertson

Jessie Robertson reviews the thirteenth episode of The Flash season 5…

This is waaaay better than Goldmember……

The Good:

The Flash is funny again! With Ralph and Barry teaming up as the scum of Central City to find a special item in their quest to defeat Cicada, you brought the funny again. No Cisco for the 2nd time in 3 weeks which sucks, but these two hamming it up as baddies really sets the mood and reminds you why this show was so successful early on. Ralph with one liners all over the place and Barry’s story as “The Chemist” was fantastic. On the side, we have Nora trying desperately to cover up her secret pact with Thawne by keeping Sherloque distracted….with love (Thawne’s idea). It works, as he becomes sidetracked by a former ballet dancer named Renee Adler (get it?) but his brilliant deduction skills make him come off more like a stalker. Nora tries to help by inviting his former ex-wives (who all are Rene Adlers, but of course, with different personalities like the biker chick, the cowgirl, etc.) in another funny bit that Sherloque played off brilliantly.

I even liked the “villain of the week”, Goldface, who steps in for Amunet Black as the big arms dealer in Central City. He is like the Colossus of Arrowverse; he’s made of gold and can control gold. There’s a pretty fun fight scene with him at the end and it ends magnificently.

The Bad:

While I enjoyed most of the main story plot, the shooting scene with Barry and Ralph played like they were in a Lasertag arena at the end. It was pretty over the top and ridiculous and all those guys they shot looked like extras, a gloriously goofy looking scene, even if it did end with a great one liner from Ralph (“I knew all that Red Dead would pay off.”) Our other side story was the thing that also didn’t sit right with me. I get Iris starting her own paper, kind of…I mean, major papers across the country are dying so doesn’t seem the best option, anyways, getting off that side tangent, the scenes with her and Cicada are cringe-inducing. I just don’t like Chris Klein at all on this show and he was just as atrocious here, especially at the table while she interviewed him. And she literally had him down and out; you can’t call your husband as soon as you leave the house and he’d be there in .000001 seconds. There’s no way Cicada gets away there! It just doesn’t play.

Rating – 8/10- Fun, fun episode and it shows that Ralph’s got a lot to offer on the team still….or is he funnier when Cisco is gone? Plus, not much Cicada so that helps as well!
