The official Twitter account for the upcoming BBC and HBO adaptation of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials has announced that Amir Wilson (The Kid Who Would Be King) has been cast in the series in the key role of Will Parry.

In the book trilogy, Will Parry was introduced at the start of the second instalment The Subtle Knife and is a 12-year-old boy who befriends Lyra Belacqua and joins her on their quest through a series of parallel worlds.

Wilson joins a cast that includes Dafne Keen (Logan) as Lyra, along with James McAvoy (Glass), Ruth Wilson (The Affair), Clarke Peters (The Wire), and Lin-Manuel Miranda (Mary Poppins Returns).

Adapting Philip Pullman’s award-winning trilogy of the same name, which is considered a modern masterpiece of imaginative fiction, the first season follows Lyra, a seemingly ordinary but brave young woman from another world. Her search for a kidnapped friend uncovers a sinister plot involving stolen children, and becomes a quest to understand a mysterious phenomenon called Dust. As she journeys through the worlds, including our own, Lyra meets Will, a determined and courageous boy. Together, they encounter extraordinary beings and dangerous secrets, with the fate of both the living — and the dead — in their hands.
