Jumanji: The Next Level passes the $600 million milestone at the global box office

January 6, 2020 by Amie Cranswick

Despite being overshadowed by all of the talk surrounding Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Sony’s action adventure sequel Jumanji: The Next Level has quietly taken its global box office haul beyond the $600 million mark in its fourth weekend.

Domestically, The Next Level has grossed $236.2 million to date, with a further $374 million from the international markets for a combined worldwide haul of $610.2 million and counting. That puts it just under $100 million below Dwayne Johnson’s other 2019 hit Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw, and it may well go on to surpass that film’s $759 million by the end of its run.

While The Next Level isn’t quite matching the unexpected success of its predecessor Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which grossed $962 million following its December 2017 release, the $125 million-budgeted sequel has already proven to be a solid hit for Sony, and its surely only a matter of time before the studio hits “continue” on the franchise.

In Jumanji: The Next Level, the gang is back but the game has changed. As they return to Jumanji to rescue one of their own, they discover that nothing is as they expect. The players will have to brave parts unknown and unexplored, from the arid deserts to the snowy mountains, in order to escape the world’s most dangerous game.

Jumanji: The Next Level is being directed by Jake Kasdan (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle) and will see the return of Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, Jack Black, and Nick Jonas alongside newcomers Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians), Danny DeVito (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), and Danny Glover (Lethal Weapon).
