Syfy to adapt George A. Romero’s Day of the Dead as TV series

February 28, 2020 by EJ Moreno

With a push to bring more horror television to the channel, Syfy announced to Deadline that will adapt a classic George A. Romero film as a series.

Syfy has given a 10-episode order for Day of the Dead, a remake of the cult classic 1985 original, which followed a group of military officers and scientists living in an underground bunker during the height of a zombie outbreak. This new series sounds a bit different though:

“Day of the Dead is the intense story of six strangers trying to survive the first 24 hours of an undead invasion.”

Jed Elinoff serves as a writer for Day of the Dead, alongside Scott Thomas, who will also serve as showrunner. The zombie series hails from Cartel Entertainment, creators of Creepshow for Shudder.

The upcoming series will join the already announced Chucky series from the original creator Don Mancini, as well as a recently announced show The Surrealtor. Chucky brings the iconic killer doll to the small-screen for the first time, while The Surrealtor is said to follow a realtor and his special team that investigates haunted and possessed houses.

Day of the Dead is expected to air on Syfy in 2021.
