Long-range tracking for Marvel’s Black Widow suggests $90 million – $130 million domestic opening

March 8, 2020 by Amie Cranswick

Assuming its release isn’t derailed by the coronavirus a la No Time To Die, Marvel Studios will unleash its long-awaited Black Widow solo movie this May as Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff kicks off Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

And, as has become customary for Marvel these past few years, it looks like the studio can expect a bumper opening for Black Widow, with early forecasts from Box Office Pro suggesting a domestic opening weekend of between $90 million and $130 million.

Black Widow’s May release will mark ten months since the last MCU movie Spider-Man: Far From Home, and as such its expected that the public will have a healthy appetite for more Marvel adventures; it will also likely benefit from an Avengers: Endgame bump, as well as a dearth of big budget releases in April now that Bond has been pushed back to November.

Of course, depending on how bad things get with the coronavirus spread, it’s entirely possible that Disney and Marvel may be forced into delaying Black Widow, but as it stands at the moment the film is still targeting its May 1st release.

In Marvel Studios’ action-packed spy thriller “Black Widow,” Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger.

Black Widow is being directed by Cate Shortland (Lore) and sees Scarlett Johansson reprising her role as Natasha Romanoff alongside Florence Pugh (Fighting With My Family) as Yelena Belova, O-T Fagbenle (The Handmaid’s Tale) as Mason, David Harbour (Stranger Things) as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Rachel Weisz (The Favourite) as Melina Vostokoff/Iron Maiden, and Ray Winstone (Sexy Beast) and Olivier Richters (The King’s Man) in as-yet-unrevealed roles. It is set for release on May 1st 2020.
