Disney pulls Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back 4K theatrical release

July 4, 2020 by Gary Collinson

Last month, it was announced that UK cinema chain Vue would be looking to kickstart the theatrical box office with a 4K release of Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back, marking the first time that any of the Original Trilogy movies have been screened in 4K resolution in the UK.

However, as reported by Variety, Disney has now scrapped its plans for Empire’s 4K release after talks with exhibitors broke down, and while Vue will still be screening Episode V to mark the film’s 40th anniversary, it will only be in 2K resolution.

UK cinema chains Vue, Cineworld and Picturehousehad planned to re-open their doors on July 10th, but with the recent news that Christopher Nolan’s Tenet and Disney’s live-action Mulan have been pushed to August, the exhibitors have opted to push back their re-openings to July 31st.

Film fans in the UK looking to return to the multiplexes can do so from today however, providing they live near a Showcase cinema, or one of the ten Odeon branches that are now back in business. A further 88 Odeon cinemas are scheduled to re-open by the end of the month.
