Adult Swim cancels The Venture Bros. after 7 seasons

September 8, 2020 by Ricky Church

After seven seasons and 17 years on the air, Adult Swim has cancelled its longest running show The Venture Bros. Series creator Christopher McCulloch (AKA Jackson Publick) made the announcement on Twitter.

Premiering in 2003 with a pilot and the series proper in 2004, The Venture Bros. followed the Venture family – Dr. Venture and his two sons Hank and Dean – and their bodyguard Brock Samson as they travelled the world in a variety of ‘get rich’ quick prospects from Dr. Venture while fending off their self-appointed archnemesis The Monarch and other supervillains. The series was a parody of classic cartoons such as Johnny Quest, G.I. Joe and many other genres. It starred the voices of James Urbaniak, Christopher McCulloch, Michael Sinterniklaas, Doc Hammer and Patrick Warburton.

Adult Swim apparently cancelled the series a few months ago while McCulloch and Hammer were writing the eighth season, which had been announced to be the series’ final season anyway. “Unfortunately, it’s true: #VentureBros has been canceled,” McCulloch said. “We got the highly disappointing news a few months ago, while we were writing what would have been season 8. We thank you, our amazing fans, for 17 years of your kind (and patient) attention. And, as always, We Love You.”

In a statement made to Variety, Adult Swim said they are looking for ways to continue and conclude the series. “We also want more Venture Bros. and have been working with Jackson [Publick] and Doc [Hammer] to find another way to continue the Venture Bros. story.”

Urbaniak, who voiced Dr. Venture, also spoke on the news of the cancellation, saying “So, as it must to all, cancellation has come for The Venture Bros. The pilot aired 17 years ago, which means the show was almost old enough to vote. It was one of the great gifts of my life & career. The fans were, quite simply, the best. Thank you, everybody. Go. Team. Venture!”
