It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia continues to make history with renewal through to season 18

December 11, 2020 by EJ Moreno

The long-running FX comedy is set to last a lot longer. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia will now run through season 18, continuing its record as the longest-running live-action comedy series of all time.

Always Sunny was previously renewed for Season 15 back in May, but during the Disney Investor’s Day conference, FX chairman John Landgraf confirmed this historical extension. In May, the original renewal officially broke the record previously held by ABC’s The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, which ran for 14 seasons.

Today, series creator Rob McElhenney took to Twitter to joke about this announcement, teasing we are only halfway through his planned arc:

Sunny was originally pitched as a 36 season arc. So happy to be halfway done. https://t.co/xT7US6RPnP

The upcoming 15th season of the show is currently in development and will follow the 14th season, which saw the gang dealing with Airbnb house guests, a focus group for a screening of Thunder Gun 4: Maximum Cool, and even McElhenney’s character Mac coming out of the closet in the show’s most heartfelt episode.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is a genre-defying and shocking sitcom that follows the life of five friends who attempt to run the bar, Paddy’s Pub, in Philadelphia. Written/executive produced by McElhenney, Glenn Howerton, and Charlie Day, It’s Always Sunny stars McElhenney, Glenn Howerton, Charlie Day, Kaitlin Olson, and Danny DeVito. The comedy, which now airs on FXX, is also available on Hulu.
