HBO Max’s The Batman spinoff series finds new showrunner following Terence Winter’s departure

January 12, 2021 by Liam Waddington

Last year, it was announced that showrunner Terence Winter was departing the upcoming The Batman spinoff series for HBO Max due to creative differences, and now, it seems like the project has found its new showrunner.

According to Deadline, Giri/Haji creator Joe Barton has taken over as showrunner for the upcoming DC series, with The Batman director Matt Reeves still onboard as executive producer under his 6th & Idaho banner. Barton’s other credits include writing for Humans and Troy: Fall of a City.

While plot and release date details are currently being kept under wraps, we do know the series is being described as an adaptation of the Gotham Central comic book series and will serve as a prequel to The Batman that “dives into how Gotham became corrupt and infested with criminals” with the Gotham City Police Department being the main focus.

Reeves is currently directing and producing The Batman, which is slated to hit theatres in March 2022.

The Batman sees Robert Pattinson (The Lighthouse) donning the cape and cowl as Bruce Wayne/Batman alongside Zoe Kravitz (Big Little Lies) as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Colin Farrell (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) as Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin, Paul Dano (Escape at Dannemora) as Edward Nashton/The Riddler, Jeffrey Wright (Westworld) as Jim Gordon, Andy Serkis (War for the Planet of the Apes) as Alfred Pennyworth, John Turturro (The Big Lebowski) as Carmine Falcone, Alex Ferns (Chernobyl) as Commissioner Pete Savage, Con O’Neill (Ordinary Lies) as Chief Mackenzie Bock, Peter Sarsgaard (The Killing) as Gotham D.A. Gil Colson and Jayme Lawson (Farewell Amor) as Bella Real.
