WandaVision director says the weekly release schedule is right for the show

January 19, 2021 by Samuel Brace

Matt Shakman, the director of WandaVision, says that the show’s weekly release schedule on Disney+ is the right thing for the show and for building excitement.

WandaVision debuted its first two episodes on Disney+ last Friday and will continue to release an episode each week throughout its run. While fans are excited to have more MCU content, many are used to the streaming strategy of dumping all episodes at once, such as with Netflix shows, so they might be curious why WandaVision doesn’t utilise this approach.

Disney+ uses a weekly release schedule with its shows, such as with The Mandalorian, but apart from this consistent strategy, director Matt Shakman has explained why it is right for WandaVision. Speaking to ET, he said:

“I love the idea of week-to-week. Binging has its place, for sure, but there’s something about the mystery — especially for a show like WandaVision — where people can think about what they’ve watched and come up with their own theories and it builds anticipation. It’s worked really well for The Mandalorian, obviously, it worked really well for Game of Thrones — a show I used to work on — it’s exciting to put something out there and allow people to kind of chew on it and come up with their own theories. But I also have to say, because we’re involved in a great meta-project with WandaVision being this love letter to the history of sitcoms, is that coming out weekly also feels right for our show, because we’re coming out the way those shows used to come out, so it all seems to make sense.”

He certainly has some good points. Being able to dwell on an episode throughout the week, think of theories, and talk about it with friends and family is all part of the fun and something that isn’t quite the same when binging all in one weekend. It also lasts longer when released weekly so we have a regular fix of MCU fun for many weeks to come.

Marvel Studios’ captivating new series WandaVision stars Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany and marks the first series from Marvel Studios streaming exclusively on Disney+. The series is a blend of classic television and the Marvel Cinematic Universe in which Wanda Maximoff and Vision—two super-powered beings living idealized suburban lives—begin to suspect that everything is not as it seems.

WandaVision features a cast that includes Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch), Paul Bettany (Vision), Kat Dennings (Darcy Lewis), Randall Park (Agent Jimmy Woo), Teyonah Parris (Empire) as Monica Rambeau, and Kathryn Hahn (Bad Moms) as Agnes.
