Scarlett Johansson on her potential MCU future after the Black Widow movie

June 7, 2021 by Gary Collinson

Despite her heroic sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame, Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff is back to kick off the big screen aspect of Marvel’s Phase Four this July with the long-awaited Black Widow solo movie.

Johansson has previously said that the prequel, taking place between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Endgame, has brought her “closure”, and now the actress has been addressing the prospect of future Marvel Cinematic Universe appearances during an interview with Total Film.

“It’s definitely bittersweet because I love my Marvel family,” said Johansson. “I’m never going to be ready to not be a part of it. They’ll always be family. I’ll never feel ready to not be in it, because I hate to feel like I’m missing out on stuff with them. And who knows? Maybe at some point, we’ll have some opportunity to collaborate in some other kind of way.”

“In every way, and certainly as an actor, it’s always better to leave a situation when you’re on top,” she continued. “And to feel good about something. It’s great. And I feel on top with this. I really do. I’m really proud of it. So we’ll see how everybody else sees it! But I will always love my experience of it.”

On the subject of Natasha’s future, we know the character is set to appear in the Disney+ animated series Marvel’s What If…?, although Johansson is one of only a handful of MCU actors yet to be confirmed as part of the voice cast. In terms of live-action however, Marvel is certainly no stranger to prequels and flashbacks, and with the doors to the Multiverse about to be kicked open with Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, well anything can happen moving forward…

In Marvel Studios’ action-packed spy thriller “Black Widow,” Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger.

Black Widow is being directed by Cate Shortland (Lore) and sees Scarlett Johansson reprising her role as Natasha Romanoff alongside Florence Pugh (Fighting With My Family) as Yelena Belova, O-T Fagbenle (The Handmaid’s Tale) as Mason, David Harbour (Stranger Things) as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Rachel Weisz (The Favourite) as Melina Vostokoff/Iron Maiden, Ray Winstone (Sexy Beast) as Dreykov and Olivier Richters (The King’s Man) in an as-yet-unrevealed role.
