Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings smashes box office projections with $128 million opening weekend

September 6, 2021 by Gary Collinson

While tracking pointed to the worst opening of any Marvel Studios movie to date, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has defied expectations with a global opening weekend of $128 million.

Domestically, the Simu Liu-led blockbuster earned $71.4 million, topping F9’s $70 million for the second biggest bow of 2021 behind Marvel’s Black Widow ($80.3 million). That’s well above early projections, which suggested a three-day opening of between $35 million and $55 million.

Shang-Chi also set a number of “pandemic-era” records in the international markets, including $7.7 million in the UK where it enjoyed a 57% market share. It also earned $17.5 million from the Asia Pacific region, although that doesn’t include China where the film is yet to receive a release date.

In total, the Destin Daniel Cretton-directed film grossed $56.2 million from 41 international markets, taking its worldwide total to $127.6 million by close of play on Sunday and an estimated $140 million at the time of writing.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (Just Mercy) and stars Simu Liu (Kim’s Convenience) as Shang-Chi, Tony Leung (Infernal Affairs) as Wenwu, Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians) as Katy, newcomer Meng’er Zhang as Xialing, Michelle Yeoh (Star Trek: Discovery) as Jiang Nan, Ronny Chieng (Crazy Rich Asians) as Jon Jon, Fala Chen (The Undoing) as Jiang Li, Florian Munteanu (Creed II) as Razor Fist, and Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange) as Wong.
