Marvel’s What If…? writer explains why the Gamora and Iron Man episode was pushed to season 2

October 11, 2021 by Gary Collinson

The season one finale of Marvel’s What If…? brought together the stars of the first eight episodes as the Guardians of the Multiverse, although the team did include one new face in Gamora, who as we glimpsed at the beginning of the episode plucked from the planet Sakaar where she was seen alongside Tony Stark in Sakaarian Iron Man armor.

This inclusion may have felt somewhat surprising, but that wouldn’t have been the case if not for the COVID, as the Gamora and Iron Man story was intended to be explored in its own episode earlier in the season. However, as head writer A.C. Bradley explains to Variety, Marvel was forced to push this back into season two due to issues arising from the pandemic.

“Basically what happened was we originally had an episode planned for earlier in the season that was a fun, light-hearted, living breathing Tony Stark-centric episode with Gamora. However, due to the COVID pandemic, one of our animation houses was hit incredibly hard, and the episode needed to be pushed into Season 2, because it would not be finished in time.”

Bradley went on to tease what’s in store from the episode, stating that: “I think everyone’s going to be surprised by the way Gamora gets that armor, and how her relationship with Tony evolves, because they’re obviously good friends in that bit that we see. So it will be a fun universe to see, hopefully, next year, and I, and I think you’re right you found the silver lining there. It is a promise of more stories to come.”

Marvel’s What If…? features the voice talents of Andy Serkis (Ulysses Klaue), Angela Bassett (Ramonda), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Benedict Wong (Wong), Benicio Del Toro (The Collector), Bradley Whitford (Agent John Flynn), Carrie Coon (Proxima Midnight), Chadwick Boseman (T’Challa), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Chris Sullivan (Taserface), Clancy Brown (Surtur), Clark Gregg (Agent Coulson), Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), Danai Gurira (Okoye), David Dastmalchian (Kurt), Djimon Hounsou (Korath), Dominic Cooper (Howard Stark), Don Cheadle (War Machine), Emily VanCamp (Sharon Carter), Evangeline Lilly (The Wasp), Frank Grillo (Crossbones), Georges St-Pierre (Batroc), Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter), Jaimie Alexander (Sif), Jeff Goldblum (The Grandmaster), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), John Kani (King T’Chaka), Jon Favreau (Happy Hogan), Josh Brolin (Thanos), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Kat Dennings (Darcy), Kurt Russell (Ego), Leslie Bibb (Christine Everhart), Mark Ruffalo (The Hulk), Michael B.
