Squid Game season 2 aiming for late 2023 or 2024 release on Netflix

May 20, 2022 by Liam Waddington

Back in November 2021, Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator behind the Netflix phenomenon Squid Game, confirmed that the series will be returning for a second season on the streaming service.

However, in an interview with Vanity Fair, the creator has clarified that Squid Game won’t be returning for a while as he and Netflix are currently aiming for a late 2023 or 2024 release date.

“[Hwang] only has about three pages’ worth of ideas that he plans to turn into a script, so there isn’t much he can say except that there will be more games,” Vanity Fair reported. The outlet later noted that a late 2023 premiere is possible for Squid Game Season 2, however, “a Season 2 release in 2024 is also in the realm of possibility.”

When discussing story details for the second season, Hwang told the outlet that “humanity is going to be put to a test through those games once again.” He added, “I want to ask the question, ‘Is true solidarity between humans possible?’”

Squid Game revolves around a contest where 456 players, all of whom are in deep financial debt, participate in a series of traditional Korean children’s games such as Red Light, Green Light and Tug of war in order to win 45.6 billion won, however, the consequence for losing the games is death. The creator has previously confirmed that Lee Jung-jae’s Gi-hun and Lee Byung-hun’s The Front Man will be returning for the sophomore season.

The first season of Squid Game is available to stream now on Netflix.
