Rick and Morty is getting an anime spinoff series at Adult Swim

May 21, 2022 by Gary Collinson

Adult Swim is set to expand the world of Rick and Morty, with THR revealing that the network has ordered the 10-episode spinoff Rick and Morty: The Anime.

The series is being directed by Takashi Sano (Tower of God), who previously helmed the two Rick and Morty anime shorts Rick and Morty vs. Genocider and Summer Meets God (Rick Meets Evil), and is described as an original work standing on its own, although it will adapt themes and elements from the main series.

“The multiverse-straddling exploits of Rick and the gang pose challenges to the family bond, but they always rise to the occasion,” said Sano. “It’s such a life-affirming sight, and Jerry is no exception. I am honored to have been given an opportunity to tell a new story about this amazing family. I hope you enjoy their adventures!”

The Emmy-winning Rick and Morty aired its fifth season back in June of last year. As yet, there’s been no word as to when we can expect the show’s return for season six, but it does still have 50 episodes remaining as part of the bumper 70-episode deal that Adult Swim signed with creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland back in 2018.
