Anne Hathaway and Salma Hayek Pinault to team for Netflix’s Seesaw Monster

November 11, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

Anne Hathaway and Salma Hayek Pinault will produce and star in an adaptation of Seesaw Monster, the latest book from Japanese crime thriller writer Kōtarō Isaka, whose Maria Beetle was turned into Sony Pictures $239 million grossing Bullet Train.

According to The Hollywood Reporter Netflix have landed the rights to Seesaw Monster, which is being described by the streaming service as “a comedy two-hander” where “Hathaway and Hayek Pinault will play rivals forced to work together.”

Kōtarō Isaka’s 2019 book is made up of two short stories, titled Seesaw Monster and Spin Monster, that are connected but set in different eras.

Seesaw Monster is set in the late Showa era, at the height of Japan’s economic bubble period, and begins with Mieko, the wife of a former journalist, having a fight with her mother-in-law Setsu. Spin Monster fast forwards events to 2050 and we’re in a world where analog technology has come back into vogue. A courier named Mito becomes involved in a big incident involving the letter of a genius engineer.

Olivia Milch, who worked on the Anne Hathaway starring Ocean’s 8, will be writing the novel’s adapted screenplay.

Next up for Hathaway is James Gray’s Armageddon Time (read our review ★★★ here), while Hayek Pinault is gearing up to shoot Angelina Jolie’s latest directorial effort Without Blood.
