Live-action Street Fighter movie taps Talk to Me directors

May 1, 2023 by Gary Collinson

The World Warriors are heading back to the big screen courtesy of Legendary Pictures, and THR is reporting that filmmaking siblings Danny Philippou and Michael Philippou are in talks to direct this latest feature film adaptation of Capcom’s iconic fighting game series Street Fighter.

Australian directors the Philippous are coming off the hit Sundance horror Talk to Me [read our ★★★★ review here], which was picked up by A24 and is slated for release in July. The brothers are said to be taking the reigns on the new Street Fighter film in a lucrative low-to-mid seven figure deal, while Legendary is also speaking to a shortlist of writers to bring together its creative team.

Street Fighter is one of the biggest IPs in video game history. The series launched in 1987, but it was its 1991 sequel Street Fighter II that became a pop culture phenomenon and launched the series into the stratosphere. A sixth entry in the mainline series will release in June.

Legendary’s new movie will become the third live-action Hollywood take on the franchise after 1994’s Street Fighter: The Movie and 2009’s Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li. While both of those were critical and commercial disasters, the fan-film Street Fighter: Legacy did spawn two well-received live-action webseries in Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist and Street Fighter: Resurrection, while there have also been numerous anime adaptations, most notably 1994’s Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie.
