Vin Diesel says female-driven Fast and Furious spin-off is in the works

May 23, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

We all know that Vin Diesel is a man who loves an F-word, predominantly “family” or “franchise”, but following Fast X‘s $320 million worldwide opening it appears that he is focusing on another with the news that a female-driven Fast and Furious spin-off is gearing up at Universal.

There has been rumours of a female-led Fast and Furious movie for a while, but now that the main franchise is approaching its final laps with the recently announced trilogy, poster-boy Vin Diesel has been talking about the direction he wants to steer the spin-offs.

Speaking with Variety about the end of the $6 billion grossing franchise, Diesel revealed that he “started developing the female spinoff…in 2017 with other spinoffs, and the sooner I deliver the finale, the sooner I can launch all the spinoffs”.

The following contains spoilers regarding Fast X, so slam those brakes on if you don’t want to have the movie ruined for you…

Fast X features the return of Gal Gadot’s Gisele and Dwayne Johnson’s Luke Hobbs, which could seriously affect the roadmap for the franchise moving forward. It was believed that a sequel to Hobbs and Shaw was dead in the water, but the return of The Rock might alter plans for a follow-up to the only Fast and Furious spin-off so far, which grossed $760 million at the worldwide box-office.

As for Gadot, she could be looking for another blockbuster franchise to steer with the uncertainty surrounding her role as Wonder Woman, so this could be an opportunity for her to lead an all-female Fast and Furious outing?

The article noted that Michelle Rodriguez probably wouldn’t be interested in reprising her role as Letty Ortiz, telling Variety that“You pass the baton on. You take the back seat. You go passenger side. When it comes the next generation, you have to. It’s the only way to let them define the future.”

Over many missions and against impossible odds, Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his family have outsmarted, out-nerved, and outdriven every foe in their path. Now, they confront the most lethal opponent they’ve ever faced: A terrifying threat emerging from the shadows of the past who’s fueled by blood revenge and who is determined to shatter this family and destroy everything—and everyone—that Dom loves, forever.

In 2011’s Fast Five, Dom and his crew took out nefarious Brazilian drug kingpin Hernan Reyes and decapitated his empire on a bridge in Rio De Janeiro. What they didn’t know was that Reyes’ son, Dante (Aquaman’s Jason Momoa), witnessed it all and has spent the last 12 years masterminding a plan to make Dom pay the ultimate price.

Dante’s plot will scatter Dom’s family from Los Angeles to the catacombs of Rome, from Brazil to London and from Portugal to Antarctica. New allies will be forged and old enemies will resurface. But everything changes when Dom discovers that his own 8-year-old son (Leo Abelo Perry, Black-ish) is the ultimate target of Dante’s vengeance.

Fast X is directed by Louis Leterrier and features a cast that includes Vin Diesel, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, John Cena, Jason Momoa, Brie Larson, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Jordana Brewster, Nathalie Emmanuel, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot, Scott Eastwood, Michael Rooker, Daniela Melchior, Alan Ritchson, Cardi B, Helen Mirren, Rita Moreno, Charlize Theron, and Gal Gadot.

Fast X is currently playing in cinemas around the world.
