Kevin Smith on finally seeing Nicolas Cage’s Superman live in The Flash

June 25, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Kevin Smith has seen The Flash, and it has opened up his want to complete his unrealised Nicolas Cage Superman movie Superman Lives, which Tim Burton was attached to direct from his screenplay in the 1990s.

“I finally got to see Nic Cage be Superman. It has been an absolute delight for me,” the filmmaker recently told Rolling Stone. “It’s mind-melting. One of the first things I thought when I saw it at the premiere is, ‘Goddammit, [the giant spider] would have worked.’ As much as I used to make fun of Jon Peters, that looked badass.”

Smith is open to working with DC Studios on bringing this multiverse story to life. Even if it was jokingly, Smith says he’d like to get a chance to make Superman Lives.

“If I’m Warner Bros., I’m going, like, ‘Fuck it. There’s a multiverse, man. Let’s give Nic Cage a Superman movie,'” he said. “You don’t have to be the only Superman, but why not? We’ve got multiple Batmans. I mean, shit, it would be one of the most interesting Superman flicks ever made.”

He adds, “With all due respect to James Gunn and Superman Legacy, like, you’re talking about one of the greatest American actors alive. I still would back that play 100 percent.”

What did you make of The Flash’s glimpse of a Nic Cage Superman, and is there still room for a Superman Lives movie? Let us know your thoughts on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…

Worlds collide in “The Flash” when Barry uses his superpowers to travel back in time in order to change the events of the past. But when his attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future, Barry becomes trapped in a reality in which General Zod has returned, threatening annihilation, and there are no Super Heroes to turn to. That is, unless Barry can coax a very different Batman out of retirement and rescue an imprisoned Kryptonian… albeit not the one he’s looking for. Ultimately, to save the world that he is in and return to the future that he knows, Barry’s only hope is to race for his life. But will making the ultimate sacrifice be enough to reset the universe?

The Flash is directed by Andy Muschietti (It) and stars Ezra Miller as Barry Allen/The Flash alongside Kiersey Clemons (Iris West), Ben Affleck (Batman), Michael Keaton (Batman), Sasha Calle (Supergirl), Michael Shannon (General Zod), Antje Traue (Faora-Ul), Kiersey Clemons (Iris West), Ron Livingston (Henry Allen), and Maribel Verdu (Nora Allen).
