The Return of the Living Dead is being rebooted

July 15, 2023 by EJ Moreno

The cult classic The Return of the Living Dead is set to make a return for another generation as it has been announced that Living Dead Media will oversee a new installment in the long-running zombie comedy franchise. Instead of a remake, the upcoming Return of the Living Dead is touted as a reboot.

Steve Wolsh (Muck, Kill Her Goats) is attached to direct. At the time of writing, no writer or actors are connected to the project; given the ongoing strike for both actors & writers, it could be some time before we see any movement there.

Living Dead Media tells fans, “Our reboot of Return of the Living Dead will expand the existing world created by the original five films while staying true to the R-rated, sci-fi, horror, dark comedy roots adored by fans of the cult classic around the world for the last 35 years.”

The company adds, “We are excited to resurrect this storied franchise for current fans and new generations of zombie fans.”

Return of the Living Dead began in 1985 with Dan O’Bannon’s titular film entry. 1988 the first sequel was unleashed with a handful of returning actors. It wasn’t until 1993’s Brian Yuzna-directed Return of the Living Dead 3 that the franchise took a new life. There were then two straight-to-television sequels in 2005, Return of the Living Dead: Necropolis and Return of the Living Dead: Rave to the Grave, but since then, there’s been no movement.

Plot details for the reboot are currently under wraps.
