The Batman spin-off The Penguin will take place “days after” the film

November 24, 2023 by EJ Moreno

After delays from the Hollywood strikes, The Penguin is gearing up to begin production once again and Empire has offered a new look at Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobbelpot, as well as some further information concerning the timeline of The Batman spin-off.

Initially, the impression was that the Farrell-led series would take place after Matt Reeves’s The Batman, but new information says it will fall very close to the original’s ending. We’ve learned the series will “pick up days after where The Batman ended, exploring the moves that Cobblepot makes in the power vacuum left by Carmine Falcone’s departure.”

Little is known about the project, but we see Cobblepot attempting to establish himself as the “new Kingpin of Gotham.” Penguin will be used to bridge the gap between the first and second of Matt Reeves’ Batman films.

Lauren LeFranc is serving as showrunner and exec producer on The Penguin along with The Batman writer-director Matt Reeves, while Craig Zobel (Mare of Easttown) is directing the first three episodes.

Taking place one week following the events of The Batman, the series explores the rise to power of Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot/Penguin in Gotham City’s criminal underworld.

Featuring in the cast of The Penguin are Colin Farrell, Cristin Milioti, Rhenzy Feliz, Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Deirdre O’Connell, Clancy Brown, Carmen Ejogo, François Chau, and David H. Holmes.

The Penguin is slated to stream on Max some time in 2024.
