Netflix won’t release Halle Berry sci-fi The Mothership

January 24, 2024 by Matt Rodgers

Netflix has downed Halle Berry’s science-fiction film The Mothership, cancelling any plans to release the Matt Charman (Bridge of Spies) directed movie in the future.

According to Jeff Sneider’s The InSneider newsletter, the in-the-can film has been shelved by the streamer for a number of reasons, although non are the du jour decision of a tax write-off, a fate which has befallen both Batgirl and Coyote Vs. Acme in the recent past.

The Mothership was completed in 2022, and scheduled for release in 2023. In the interim it was decided that the film needed to undergo “significant reshoots” which were deemed to be both expensive and impractical. This was largely down to the fact that the cast was made up of young actors in the main roles, who have aged significantly since the film wrapped. The report states that this wasn’t the main reason for cancelling the movie, but the fact it would have been an extensive process with even more delays led them to this decision.

Marking the directorial debut of Academy Award nominee Matt Charman, The Mothership was described as a sci-fi adventure that follows Sara Morse (Halle Berry) one year since her husband mysteriously vanished from their rural farm. When she discovers a strange, extraterrestrial object underneath their home, Sara and her kids embark on a race to find their husband, father and most importantly – the truth.

The film also featured Molly Parker (Deadwood), Omari Hardwick (Army of the Dead), Sydney Lemmon (TÁR), John Ortiz (Peppermint), and Paul Guilfoyle (Session 9).

Netflix had previously collaborated with Halle Berry on her feature directorial debut Bruised.
