The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim debuts first-look images

June 12, 2024 by Ricky Church

New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Animation and Sola Entertainment have released the first images of their upcoming anime film The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim via Entertainment Weekly.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is a prequel set nearly 200 years before The Lord of the Rings. The film begins when “a sudden attack by Wulf, a clever and ruthless Dunlending lord seeking vengeance for the death of his father, forces Helm and his people to make a daring last stand in the ancient stronghold of the Hornburg – a mighty fortress that will later come to be known as Helm’s Deep. Finding herself in an increasingly desperate situation, Héra, the daughter of Helm, must summon the will to lead the resistance against a deadly enemy intent on their total destruction.”

The film stars the voice talents of Gaia Wise (A Walk in the Woods) as Héra, Brian Cox (Succession) as King Helm and Luke Pasqualino (Snowpiercer) as Wulf with Miranda Otto reprising her role as Eowyn as the story’s narrator. The above image shows Héra brandishing her sword as she faces down their enemies while another sees her, Helm and her brothers Haleth and Hama taking court. The final image is of Wulf leading his forces against Rohan.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is directed by Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell SAC_2045) and based on information from J.R.R. Tolkien’s appendices in Return of the King. The script was written by Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou based off a story by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews. Lord of the Rings screenwriter and producer Phillipa Boyens is executive producing with Joseph Chou (Blade Runner: Black Lotus).

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim will be released December 13th, 2024.
