Marvel’s X-Men ’97 taps new writer for season 3

July 10, 2024 by Ricky Church

With Beau DeMayo’s sudden departure right from X-Men ’97 right before its series premiere, the question of who Marvel Animation will name as the new showrunner and head writer has been a question on fans minds for the past few months. Now, according to Deadline, the studio has hired What If…? and Ms. Marvel writer Matthew Chauncey to helm the third season of X-Men ’97.

X-Men ’97 is a revival of the iconic 1990s animated series X-Men, picking up where the original left off as the X-Men continue to fight for a world where mutants can live in peace and stop their enemies, whether human or mutant, from destroying the world. The series quickly became a huge success on Disney+, becoming the most watched animated series on the service by the time its first season concluded.

DeMayo was the showrunner and lead writer for seasons one and two. At the time of his exit, season two had been fully written and was in the midst of production. Some of the scripts for season two have reportedly been revised slightly to take DeMayo’s exit into account, but Chauncey will lead the third season which is already in development.

Chauncey joins X-Men ’97 director Jake Castorena for the third season while Larry Houston and Eric and Julia Lewald, producers on the original X-Men series, remain onboard as consulting producers.

The revival revisits the iconic era of the 1990s as The X-Men, a band of mutants who use their uncanny gifts to protect a world that hates and fears them, are challenged like never before, forced to face a dangerous and unexpected new future.

X-Men ’97 features the voice talents of Ray Chase as Cyclops, Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, Cal Dodd as Wolverine, JP Karliak as Morph, Lenore Zann as Rogue, George Buza as Beast, AJ LoCascio as Gambit, Holly Chou as Jubilee, Isaac Robinson-Smith as Bishop, Matthew Waterson as Magneto and Adrian Hough as Nightcrawler.

X-Men ’97 can be streamed on Disney+.
