A24’s Friday the 13th prequel series Crystal Lake resurrected under Welcome to Derry showrunner

August 19, 2024 by Matt Rodgers

A24’s Friday the 13th series Crystal Lake has been killed-off and resurrected more times than its iconic mask-wearing monster, but now it has sat bolt upright once again with the news that Welcome to Derry showrunner Brad Caleb Lane is to bring the show to Peacock.

Kane inherits Camp Crystal Lake duties from Hannibal‘s Bryan Fuller, who exited the project in June citing creative differences. Deadline reports that he will become series’ creator, writer and executive producer, and said in a statement that “From the moment I watched Jason Voorhees squeeze a guy’s eyeball out of its socket (in glorious 3D!) at the tender age of 8 years old, I knew my creative path was someday destined to converge with The Man Behind The Mask.”

First announced in 2022, the Friday the 13th series had finally hoped to drag the franchise from the bottom of the development hell lake following the long-running legal saga over the rights to the original film, but appeared dead in the water when Fuller exited the project.

As well as being co-showrunner and executive producer on Max’s It-prequel Welcome to Derry, Kane has previously worked as a writer and executive producer on Michael Mann’s critically acclaimed crime-drama Tokyo Vice.
