The Third Man to return to UK screens and on 4K Collector’s Edition for 75th anniversary

September 5, 2024 by Robert W Monk

Carol Reed’s classic film noir The Third Man is set to return to cinemas across the UK from Friday 6 September. The much-loved British post-war thriller has been remastered to 4K in celebration of its 75th anniversary and is also due out in a collector’s UHD edition from StudioCanal this autumn.

Written by English novelist Graham Greene (Brighton Rock, The Fallen Idol) and directed by Carol Reed (Oliver! The Fallen Idol) The Third Man brings a war-devastated Vienna to life in expressionist monochrome cinematography. The mystery and shadows of the city are explored through stand-out performances from Joseph Cotton, Alida Vailli and Orson Welles.

In 1949, American pulp writer Holly Martins (Joseph Cotten) arrives in Vienna looking for old pal Harry Lime (Orson Welles). He soon learns that Lime has been run down and killed in a road accident. He then runs into Chief Calloway of the British Military Police (Trevor Howard) who informs him that Lime was involved in the black market and was wanted by the police. Martins sets out to uncover the truth…

The Third Man is running at UK Cinemas from Friday 6 September. The 75th-anniversary Studiocanal UHD collection will be released this autumn.
